John Stewart on Sen. Kyl’s ‘political strategy known as lying’

John Stewart on Sen. Kyl’s
‘political strategy known as lying’

Stewart on Sen. Kyl’s ‘political strategy known as lying’, The Raw Story, April 12, 2011, by Kase Wickman, used with permission, quoted verbatim: Evans Liberal Politics partners with The Raw Story to bring you breaking news and all the political stories you crave:

Last week, one of the last sticking points in reaching a budget deal to avoid government shutdown was whether Planned Parenthood would receive federal funding or not. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) argued that abortion is “well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does,” when abortions actually account for only 3 percent of PPFA’s services. When confronted, his office said that it was “not intended to be a factual statement.”

Jon Stewart contributed his own “not intended to be a factual statement” about Kyl on last night’s Daily Show. Find out what it is, and hear his analysis of ”the political strategy known as lying” by watching the clips below.

Commentary on the Morality of Abortion

Commentary by Evans Liberal Politics owner Paul Evans: while it is difficult for me as a Christian man to fully support all abortions, and I am in the process of reassessing my position, I usually come down on the side of “life” and against abortion for “non-necessary” first trimester abortions. This is because a developing fetus, eight days after conception, has a scientifically measured, undoubtedly “human” brainwave. So to abort such a fetus is to take a human life. At the same time, I am all for abortion in the case of rape or incest, or if the mother’s life is at stake, because some measure of decency needs to be maintained for the woman, and not just for the unborn life.

Abortion is the most difficult issue I know of, morally. One tries to make moral decisions about what is right and moral and ethical as a Christian man. Yet at the same time, denying first trimester abortions would throw about 300,000 unwanted infants a year into the care of our network of Social Services. Do you think that Republicans would be willing to provide the increased funding for THAT? I think you know the answer.

It goes without saying that we also thoroughly support all of Planned Parenthood’s manifold “other” services, the mammograms, the pap smears, and the family planning. We are all for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy, for family planning, and such services as condom distribution. We are for the “morning after pill” as this prevents unwanted pregnancy without harming any developing fetus that could be called HUMAN. And we are all for the realistic teaching of sex education, realizing that teenagers are human beings, have “rampant hormones,” you might say, and are going to have sex. They need to know how to use a condom. And they need realistic counseling.

I do fully support Planned Parenthood, despite their abortion services. They do a wonderful job of providing women’s health services in over 800 clinics nationwide. For many women, this is the only doctor’s appointment, for a mammogram or pap smear, that they will have all year.

Moreover, of the money provided to Planned Parenthood by the federal government, not one penny goes to abortion services. Do you think our fine and moral Senator Kyl actually cares about the health of poor women in inner cities, or is he just playing to his Republican base? No brainer, right?

These clips originally aired on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, on April 11, 2011.

With News Updated on Libya

See U.S. to impose sanctions on Libya, CBS News, February 25, 2011, by CBSNews.com.

See Libya: Defiant protestors brave live fire on Tripoli’s streets, Telegraph.co.uk, February 25, 2011, by Richard Spencer: "Col Muammar Gaddafi’s last stronghold was plunged into violence last night after pro-regime gunmen opened fire on thousands of protesters who tried to take to the streets after Friday prayers."

See U.N. to Meet on Sanctions for Libya as Revolt Deepens, The New York Times, February 25, 2011, by Kareem Fahim and David D. Kirkpatrick, excerpt quoted verbatim:

BENGHAZI, Libya — International efforts to stem the bloodshed in Libya appeared to gain momentum on Friday, with the United Nations Security Council scheduled to meet to discuss a draft proposal for sanctions against Libyan leaders and NATO convening an emergency session in Brussels.

In Tripoli, meanwhile, antigovernment demonstrators pledged to take to the streets of the capital on Friday despite threats of a violent crackdown by pro-government mercenaries and security forces, as Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi attempted to reinforce the city that remains one of his last strongholds in a widespread rebellion.

With the eastern half of the country now under control of opposition forces, rebels seeking to overturn Colonel Qaddafi repelled a concerted assault by his forces on Thursday on cities close to the capital, removing any doubt that Libya’s patchwork of protests had evolved into an increasingly well-armed revolutionary movement.

The series of determined stands by rebel forces on Thursday — especially in the strategic city of Zawiyah, near important oil resources and 30 miles from the capital, Tripoli — presented the gravest threat yet to the Libyan leader. In Zawiyah, more than 100 people were killed as Colonel Qaddafi’s forces turned automatic weapons on a mosque filled with protesters, a witness said. Still, residents rallied afterward.

Sunday Talk – And They’re Off!, Daily Kos, September 26, 2010, by Silly Rabbit, quoted verbatim:

On Thursday, House Republican leaders surrounded themselves with even more tools to unveil their long-awaited “Pledge to America“.Although the “Pledge” drew nearlyuniversalpraise from across the political spectrum, President Obama denounced it as a carbon copy of Newt Gingrich’s failed “Contract on America”.

Well, whatever…

Video surfaced of O’Donnell vowing to use her magical powers to rid America of sex.

humorous image claiming that abstinence is 99.99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy

O’DONNELL: The sad reality is — yes, there is something you can do about it. And the sad reality, to tell them slap on a condom is not –

NIES: You’re going to stop the whole country from having sex?

O’DONNELL: Yeah. Yeah!

NIES: You’re living on a prayer if you think that’s going to happen.

O’DONNELL: That’s not true. I’m a young woman in my thirties and I remain chaste.

With all of these classic clips floating around, is it any wonder that O’Donnell doesn’t feel the need to do any more national media interviews.

Meanwhile:

Fellow “Grizzly Mama” Sharron Angle is taking a different approach to the national media.

ANGLE: It’s going really well. If you’re interested in just the Internet part of that — and of course I’ve been criticized for saying that I like to be friends with the [press] — but here’s the deal: when I get a friendly press outlet — not so much the guy that’s interviewing me — it’s their audience that I’m trying to reach.

a box with one of those free internet advertising schemes inside of it

So, if I can get on Rush Limbaugh, and I can say, “Harry Reid needs $25 million. I need a million people to send twenty five dollars to SharronAngle.com.” The day I was able to say that [even], he made $236,000 dollars. That’s why it’s so important.

Somebody … I’m going on Bill O’Reilly the 16th. They say, “Bill O’Reilly, you better watch out for that guy, he’s not necessarily a friendly” … Doesn’t matter, his audience is friendly, and if I can get an opportunity to say that at least once on his show — when I said it on Sean Hannity’s television show we made $40,000 before we even got out of the studio in New York.

And, finally:

Despite all of the good that Sarah Palin’s endorsement did for O’Donnell and Angle (not so much for their party), not every teabagging candidate wants her brand of help.

HOST: A lot of tea party people who support you. The de facto leader, if there is one, in the tea party, Sarah Palin, do you want her to campaign for you in the 10th?

PERRY: No I don’t. I don’t want her to come down. She represents — she’s an entertainer, she represents the tea party movement nationally, but the tea party movement in the 10th district, whether it be the group in Quincy, the group in Pembroke, or the group on the Cape, they’re just hard working people [...].

HOST: Can we just for one second talk about that entertainer as you call her for one second. She calls you on the phone and says Jeff Perry, I’d like to come, I’m not asking you for to invite me — I’d like to come. You’re going to say no?

PERRY: I’m going to say no, yes.

If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it.
