John Stewart on Sen. Kyl’s
‘political strategy known as lying’
Stewart on Sen. Kyl’s ‘political strategy known as lying’, The Raw Story, April 12, 2011, by Kase Wickman, used with permission, quoted verbatim: Evans Liberal Politics partners with The Raw Story to bring you breaking news and all the political stories you crave:
Last week, one of the last sticking points in reaching a budget deal to avoid government shutdown was whether Planned Parenthood would receive federal funding or not. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) argued that abortion is “well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does,” when abortions actually account for only 3 percent of PPFA’s services. When confronted, his office said that it was “not intended to be a factual statement.”
Jon Stewart contributed his own “not intended to be a factual statement” about Kyl on last night’s Daily Show. Find out what it is, and hear his analysis of ”the political strategy known as lying” by watching the clips below.
Commentary on the Morality of Abortion
Commentary by Evans Liberal Politics owner Paul Evans: while it is difficult for me as a Christian man to fully support all abortions, and I am in the process of reassessing my position, I usually come down on the side of “life” and against abortion for “non-necessary” first trimester abortions. This is because a developing fetus, eight days after conception, has a scientifically measured, undoubtedly “human” brainwave. So to abort such a fetus is to take a human life. At the same time, I am all for abortion in the case of rape or incest, or if the mother’s life is at stake, because some measure of decency needs to be maintained for the woman, and not just for the unborn life.
Abortion is the most difficult issue I know of, morally. One tries to make moral decisions about what is right and moral and ethical as a Christian man. Yet at the same time, denying first trimester abortions would throw about 300,000 unwanted infants a year into the care of our network of Social Services. Do you think that Republicans would be willing to provide the increased funding for THAT? I think you know the answer.
It goes without saying that we also thoroughly support all of Planned Parenthood’s manifold “other” services, the mammograms, the pap smears, and the family planning. We are all for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy, for family planning, and such services as condom distribution. We are for the “morning after pill” as this prevents unwanted pregnancy without harming any developing fetus that could be called HUMAN. And we are all for the realistic teaching of sex education, realizing that teenagers are human beings, have “rampant hormones,” you might say, and are going to have sex. They need to know how to use a condom. And they need realistic counseling.
I do fully support Planned Parenthood, despite their abortion services. They do a wonderful job of providing women’s health services in over 800 clinics nationwide. For many women, this is the only doctor’s appointment, for a mammogram or pap smear, that they will have all year.
Moreover, of the money provided to Planned Parenthood by the federal government, not one penny goes to abortion services. Do you think our fine and moral Senator Kyl actually cares about the health of poor women in inner cities, or is he just playing to his Republican base? No brainer, right?
