Christian Theology, The Bible’s Literal Truth
and How This Affects One Liberal’s Political Views

How My Conscience as a Committed Christian
Has Led Me to Strong Liberal Political Beliefs

Evans Liberal Politics, rewritten and edited April 29, 2011, originally published January 3, 2011, by Paul Evans:

I’ve been writing for perhaps most of my 54 years. And I have had a lot of friends who aren’t Christian and even more who aren’t spiritual, as I am. I have to say: I do realize that perhaps most of you won’t get this at all. There will be those who are Biblical literalists who won’t like it, and those of a skeptical bent who won’t like it, and I am afraid Republicans in general won’t like it. So be it. I’m simply trying to explain how my own faith has led me to my liberal political persuasion, and making a few arguments for that position.

While now I am a strong Christian, and I try to live my life as I believe a Christian should, I do not believe in the strict and universal literal truth of all passages in the Bible. It is a document written down by men, and the wonderful spiritual inspiration which caused it to be written down is no less flawed than were the very flawed and human men who first wrote it down. At the same time, as a committed Christian, I do believe the Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit, and some of the arguments I make below are derived from Bible passages that are important to me, particularly from the New Testament. However, my emphasis is on the centrality of the CARING that Jesus’ life represents, as shown to us in the Gospels and through my own personal experiences of Jesus and spiritual interactions with Him.

To some extent I truly feel the Old Testament was written, yes, for all humanity, and forever, yet the rules in it were meant to apply to the pastoral Hebrew people of those times. I also think that the Gospels show that, to Jesus, the “rules” were never that important. Jesus disliked the Pharisees, the ruling Hebrew authorities of that day, whose emphasis was on strict observance of the Old Testament laws. He found them ostentatiously scrupulous as to the Laws’ observance, to the point of falseness. I will have more to say on “laws versus love,” you might say, shortly. One should also keep in mind, as to the Old Testament, that this was handed down orally for some 800 years, scholars believe, before it was ever written down. I really think that quite a bit of the Old Testament is more about the customs of the ancient Hebrew people than it is a reflection of the Word of God. Certainly I feel that way about certain passages of the Old Testament.

The literal truth of the New Testament seems less questionable to me, and yet I realize at the same time that it is by our own fallible human minds that various translations of the Bible in fact become available, and that Scripture is written down in the first place. In fact different translations have some different content, and if you study the Bible’s content historically, it becomes apparent that to a lesser degree, the content of Bible passages has evolved over time, for example originally there were 12 spiritual gifts but since the Catholic Bible of 1909, there have only been 9 gifts. Finally that no person gets any meaning from the Bible except through the interpretations of a flawed and very human mind. God gave us a mind, a fragment of the divine spark, and we need to realize that it is only by the limited powers of our humanly fallible minds that we understand anything. And the Bible is certainly not an easy document to understand fully!

As to the Old Testament, my favorite passage from the New Testament about all that is from Luke 10:27, where it is said that the sum of all the Law and the Prophets is to “love God and love your neighbor as yourself,” (paraphrase), to which Jesus replied “Yes! Do this and you will live!”. Living a truly caring life is not such an easy thing, either.

The Reverend Candace Chellew-Hodge speaks about the Bible as literal truth, with an interpretation that one should never argue scripture. She says:

Those who see the Bible as “God’s literal word” only know one way to read any passage, and it’s usually to back up their current beliefs about God, homosexuality or any other issue. We have to remember that this is an ancient book. It was written at a time when people believed the world was flat and that the earth was in the middle of a three-tiered world with heaven above and hell below. It was written at a time when people believed that the whole of human reproduction was held in the sperm of a man and a woman was merely an incubator. Speaking of women, this was a time when they were seen as chattel — property to be passed along from father to husband, from husband to brother and so on. It was written at a time when slavery was seen as God-ordained and animal sacrifice was the way to cleanse sins.

As for myself, I know that many conservative Christians have “problems” about those who are spiritually gifted, and say that the Old Testament power of prophecy (basically, mediumship) is in some way evil or wrong to practice. I can only say that I have prayed spiritually and interacted with Jesus many times, and he told me to quote you a verse also from Luke, in this case Luke 10:16 – "Then he (Jesus) said to the disciples, ‘Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.’" I have a very close interpersonal relationship with the Lord. If you will judge me for my liberal beliefs and the sinners I associate with, that is on your head. Here I would cite a truly wonderful passage, Romans Chapter 3, particularly verses 21 through 24: (New Living Translation):

21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard (some versions read, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"). 24 Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

It was Jesus himself who warned us, in Matthew 7:1-2, "1 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." And I, Paul Evans swear to you, Jesus has let me know (during spiritual prayer and that communion with Him) that we are to love one another, and never judge anyone. For loving one another pleases God and removes the penalties of the Law that hold from the Old Testament. It is by CARING for one another that we please God while here on earth. For me, God is a God of love, not the angry God of the Old Testament, but the God who came to earth and showed us God’s will by his life of a caring ministry and sacrifice in the person of Jesus

The Book of Revelation particularly within the New Testament is, besides being controversial, is the least credible to me of New Testament books as to it’s literal truth. I find it an allegorical work and one that is very useful to growth and development, yet somehow I question it’s literal truth in that I have a hard time believing that God, in his totally loving nature, would subject mankind to that sort of ordeal. Did he not promise, in the Old Testament (if you believe in the literal truth of the Bible), after the Flood, never to again destroy the world? The Book of Revelation has always troubled me, and I believe that thinking it literally true has caused a great deal of trouble in the world, as it inspires neocons (right wing militaristic Republicans) to work towards it’s fulfillment, which I find rather evil. I believe in full co-existence with other world religions, while personally having strong yet liberal Christian beliefs, a strong spirituality, and a strong faith in God. Call me a very faithful and spiritual Christian liberal.

Passages in the Bible which strain our credulity as to their literal truth are all too easy to find. One need look no further then the wonderful and poetic Genesis Chapter 1, the story of Creation (New International Version). Here each day of creation ends with something like “morning came and evening came, an ‘nth’ day,” there being seven days of creation. Notice the sequence of creation (and here it does not matter if you interpret the “day” as literally 24 hours or as in the original Hebrew, “a period of time.” Look at the very first day. Here God created light and darkness and called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And here and for each of the remaining days of creation, that day’s creation ends with something like “And there was evening, and there was morning—the (first) day.”

Yet the sun and the moon were not created until the fourth day. I’m sorry: we are rational, thinking human beings. By what stretch of the imagination is the creation illuminated and does morning come and evening come on days one through three without a sun even existing (until day four)? If words and logic mean anything, the Creation story CANNOT be literally true. That does not mean it is not moving, and it does not mean it is not poetic and important. But if you believe that is literally true, you have not thought the matter through or words and logic mean nothing to you, in which case, why bother with reading? God Bless us all, anyway.

What is important to me is mainly the New Testament, although the Old Testament is a wonderful chronicle of the history of the Jewish people, God’s people at that. And what is important to me in the New Testament is the example of strong CARING that Jesus showed for us to follow, by his whole life. Jesus showed us that God desires that we CARE for one another, and he also showed us how high the cost of true caring can be. But a life lived in caring for others is a happy, joyous life, and that is how God meant for our lives to be.

Another line of evidence of the nature of God and his will for us can be found in the pre-Socratic philosophical concept known as “Logos.” If you investigate this term, you will see that there are many nouns and adjectives associated with it — the nature of God, examined philosophically, the logic or order of the universe — but that Logos has only one value associated with it, and that value is caring. In fact, the early Christian church came to associate this pagan philosophical concept with the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, or Jesus. Thus, for me, Logos and Jesus are all about CARING and living caring lives, and I believe this is in harmony with the order of things, with the whole order of the universe. I also think the reason mankind suffers so much in the modern world and feels so alienated is because of how far we have got away from leading truly caring lives. To not be caring is thus outside of the whole natural order of things, and leads to pain and alienation. God meant for us to be caring people.

Comment by Evans Liberal Politics owner Paul Evans: Even while I find the Bible to not be literally true throughout (and many Bible scholars will agree with me), certain Bible passages are very illuminating. One such is Matthew 17: 1-13: The Transfiguration. So far as Bible scholars can tell, the Gospel of Matthew was the earliest of the four Gospels, written about 50 A.D. The Gospels of Mark and Luke followed in about 70 A.D. and John is believed to have been written perhaps about 90 A.D. Some liberal Christian theologians have commented that John is the only Gospel which affirms that Jesus is really God, and remark that the earlier church did not claim such a thing. Whether or not you may believe that Jesus is God, such a passage as Matthew 17: 1-13 surely seems to affirm that Jesus is God’s Son, and not simply a prophet, and that this belief infused the earliest Christian church’s writings. In fact, the early Church existed as a sect within Judaism, and it was not, scholars believe, until about 170 A.D. that this faith actually called itself “Christian,” as distinct from Judaism. (You do realize, Jesus was a Jew, right?) The nature of the passage above, which is from Matthew and thus an early writing, is such as to make the fact that the early church believed in the divinity of Jesus clearly apparent.

However it is Christ’s very life here on earth, in particular the emphasis this shows on the centrality of CARING, a caring for each other, much as Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned in his concept of the Blessed or "Beloved Community," which has caused me to devote so much effort to promoting liberalism. I highly recommend that you take a look at the collection of The Sermons and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Wikipedia. I see a liberal political agenda for society as central to Jesus’ wish that we “feed his sheep,” and I find his last words to Peter very telling. Just before he ascended into heaven Jesus asked Peter if he loved him. Peter said, “Lord, you know I love you.” To which Jesus replied, “Feed my sheep.” Jesus was no hypocrite. Jesus meant BOTH figurative AND literal feeding of his sheep. Surely he meant that we must be our brother’s keeper, and liberalism and a progressive vision fulfills that idea for me.

Leading caring lives may fit in well with liberalism, conceptually, for me, yet I am only a Democrat and not a Republican because, to a slight degree, they are more about “feeding Jesus sheep” and about society taking care of its less fortunate citizens than is the G.O.P. I want to see crack babies and crack mothers have a minimum standard of living, and not have to live in homeless shelters. I want to see elderly retires maintain their Social Security benefits and Medicare. We have recently seen what Paul Ryan and the House Republicans would do with these benefits. So yes, I am a Democrat, but for me, the Democratic Party does not even go far enough. I’d like to see universal health care for all, and guaranteed work, and in these bad economic times, I’d like to see something like the old W.P.A. brought back to help the unemployed help themselves. I also want to see a progressive tax structure where the fortunate help the less fortunate and where corporations pay their fair share and are not allowed to export jobs oversees and use foreign sweat shop labor. To me, all of this is involved in having a caring society. But NOT because they are Democratic ideas, rather, because they are the right thing to do. And I do believe that Jesus would like to see that sort of society. That’s why I am a liberal.

Acts 4:32-35 NIV

The Believers Share Their Possessions

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

Here I want to make note of something many of you will find very controversial and dislike. I have always felt that Jesus whole life here on earth was one that only a basically liberal person could have lived. His strong emphasis on CARING, the way he loved everyone he met, regardless of what they believed, the way he lived for others and did not care about money, or power, just about helping one another, always struck me as a very liberal sort of life. So anyway, below is a symbol a friend of mine made describing Jesus as a liberal. Many of you won’t like this…. Jesus said to tell you that he did not TELL me to put the graphic there, but that he DID give me his permission to put it below. I always thought that Jesus is, in fact, very much a liberal. What do you think about this? As if this article weren’t going to be controversial enough, I pressed Jesus about this in prayer (I am somewhat spiritually gifted and I have interacted with Jesus in prayer rather often lately), and he did give me his permission for me to put the graphic image below. Deal with it.

For those who find my particular sort of faith in Jesus repugnant or doubt my spiritual gifts, at least you’ll never hear anything like what showed up on Daily Kos today from me: See Breaking! Evangelical Christians actually announce date of Rapture, (January 3, 2010, by change the Be). If you’re wondering, the "end" is supposed to be May 21st of this year. Personally, I am convinced that we do not even KNOW the true nature of God, much less his plans. Why not try to make the world a better, more livable place instead of planning for its end (which has been done throughout history).

Logos, or Why I am a Night Owl
and a Liberal

With Jimi Hendrix Video:
All Along the Watchtower

Evans Liberal Politics, revised March 24, 2011, by Paul Evans: Originally published February 28, 2010, in honor of my father Dr. Jack E. Evans’ 85th birthday. May God grant him many more peaceful years on this earth.

I have always loved the night, found my peace and strength during it, and knew its quietude. On the other hand, “darkness” is very pervasive as a metaphor for evil. As a “decent”, Christian man, I enjoy the quiet and solitude of the night. A friend wrote: “at night, you can see the stars.” The “enemy” — which certainly, whatever you think “it” is, comprises illogical things like uncaring, hatred and ignorance — comes against us at all times of day or night, in my experience.

Always remember to have hope and to trust in the goodness of the Universe. . Whatever else it is, the universe is a very logical place with rules and laws and being so logical, it only makes sense that if it has logic, it is caring. Or so speculated the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus when he arrived at the model of the universe described by the word Logos. The early Christians believed Logos to be a description of the second person of the holy Trinity, or Jesus. If you examine the term Logos and do a study of the term’s meaning, you will find a number of nouns and adjectives, phrases like “the order of the Universe, philosophically considered,” but you will only find one VALUE associated with Logos. That value is CARING. It is humans who are all too often illogically uncaring.

wonderful photo of the late Ted Kennedy from the last few years of his life, with an American flag as a backdrop

My survival, peace and sanity were preserved for me in the quiet of the night, and I am a “night owl,” partly of necessity with the “24 hour news cycle” I report on. My “rescue” has always been, as a completely normal human, interacting with the special people in my life. I really do need this in my life and it helps me quite a bit. I had felt quite alone and separated from having friends recently, and need to pray about it.

All that really matters, all I think Jesus really cares about, is that we live caring lives and not hurt anyone. And believe me, this costs. Jesus’ whole recorded life consisted entirely of a ministry of caring.

Take a look at the last words of Jesus before he ascended into heaven, after the crucifixion. By this I mean the exchange between Peter and Jesus recorded in John 21:14-18. Three times Jesus asked Peter if he, Peter, loves Jesus, three times, Peter answered, “Lord, you know I love you,” and each time Jesus replied, “Feed my sheep.” Make out of this a purely metaphorical statement to the church to grow in numbers and to be spiritually nourished, but given the context of this passage, and knowing that Jesus was no hypocrite, didn’t Jesus mean the “feed my sheep” BOTH spiritually and literally? Doesn’t this mean that we should look out after one another’s welfare? That has always been my contention and is one of the main reasons I am a liberal.

It doesn’t even matter if you are a Christian for the caring demonstrated in Jesus’ life to have significance. The more you analyze it, the more you will see: being caring is logical and being uncaring is illogical. And when you ARE caring, and do it over and over again, this makes you a more caring person and you are happy in life. People who are uncaring are generally ultimately dissatisfied with their lives, are they not?

When you are being uncaring, you are messing with the logic of the universe.

Jesus last request on earth, to “feed his sheep,” is a main reason why I am a Democrat, since even when it is welfare, it is so helpful to those in need. And Jesus cared about need. And the Universe is a big place and there are “some things Google can’t answer”.

In keeping with my thoughts about “caring”, the main reason I am a Democrat is that I feel we should be “our brothers’ keeper.” To me, however flawed they are, the Democrats are more about that than are the Republicans. At least in Congress. I do fully realize that good people are good people, of whatever party, and that some people feel charity should be managed through churches and privately. To me, poverty and need are just too large a problem and must be handled on a national scale. And no matter what you think, Obama is “the best one around” for 2012, despite his limitations, and even though I disagree with him about a lot that is going on. I hope you can get that.

The Conscience of a Christian Liberal in Wooster, Ohio
(Revised and Updated)

Evans Liberal Politics, March 3, 2010, by Paul Evans (revised and updated, November 29 and December 2, 2010, and reviewed and updated March 3, 2011): It was very important to me personally to share this with you. Whether or not you might agree with my views, I hope there is something for you to learn here.

My name is Paul Evans, owner of Evans Liberal Politics. In keeping with our emphasis here on caring and sharing, I want to share my faith and spiritual beliefs with you, and show you how they have contributed to my liberal beliefs. My faith is very strong, but some of my beliefs are unusual and may be controversial. So Be it. Truly I know and love our Lord! Quite a few times in my life, the last a little over a month ago, I have spiritually communed with Jesus, and I am so very happy about that! To me, the Lord has a very loving, caring and kind character, and I “talk” (in a sense) to him when his presence is felt (so far I have always known when it is He). I do not really “hear” or really, sense words from spirits other than Jesus, but can always get a “yes” or “no” answer from them and have a definite “sense” of the visiting spirit’s personality. This is what it means for me, to be “spiritually gifted.”

I cannot tell you the peace Jesus gives me, except to say that, so far as I can tell, the essence of Jesus is caring and it is light and it is love, and of course Jesus is a spirit. I must say that Jesus has also a grave sense of withheld power and gravity, which he has so far lovingly withheld from revealing much to me. But the sense of it is there. From what I know, the view of Jesus as an impassioned, passionate person does not quite ring true, as I know Him as also very kind, patient, caring and loving, yet also serious and rather grave. But there is a Peace and also a strong feeling of patience about Him….

Spiritual communications are a commonplace in my own life. And spiritual discernment — being aware of just what spirit you are “talking” (or better, interacting) with, without words — is a difficult thing. Spirits are more alike than you might imagine in their essence (or the experience of them), at least that has been my experience. I’m sorry if this whole spiritual world is alien to you as a reader, all I can do is testify that is is very real to me, and to many others also.

I used to hope for and pray for Jesus to talk to me, and also to somehow rescue me from my situation or “fix” it. (Now it is more a confidence in God and the future, even though I remain very poor.) So it was natural that sometimes I used to confuse some very good and very kind spirits with Jesus, as I had hoped they were, in fact, Jesus. And Jesus doesn’t just come running when you call him. As the Bible says, not everyone who “knocks” on his door gets an answer. These things are up to Jesus, and His ways are beyond our understanding. Also, sometimes (rarely) I had thought the spirit visiting was someone else when it was in fact the kind and patient Jesus: kind and patient with ME, for I have many faults and lack understanding in many ways.

Christian, Liberal AND Spiritual

The Bible calls such a gift as talking to those who have passed away (but whose spirit lives on) “prophecy” and we moderns call it mediumship, and many in the church condemn it, yet I have had this gift since my 30th birthday, and I am 54 years old now. I did not ask for this gift, and although at times it has been a rather heavy burden for me, as it can be rather difficult to cope with until you are used to it, in no way am I a witch nor do I have any dealing with any (figurative) spiritual darkness. Spirits come and go, completely beyond my control, and I feel them physically in my head and in my heart, almost like a super-energetic gas, yet seemingly immaterial, and I could not even help interacting with them if I wanted to. I tell you, such an enchantment is a wonderful, though sometimes difficult to manage, thing! Surely, I know and love Jesus, and if God grants me this gift, what could be wrong with it? The gift is from God, and there is nothing evil or wrong about it. I am an open and honest man, and I have decided not to hide my gift, but to share it with my readers. I don’t mind being this open about my unusual beliefs, nor what it exposes me to. In fact, I consider it a witness for Christ and God.

So let me share my faith and my ideas with you. I hope some of the ideas I set forth here might be useful to you. At this time, I stand as a committed Christian, first and foremost. I am going through some hard times now, financially, but my faith is strong and committed. Many of my friends are people of other beliefs or even lack of a belief, and as it says in the Bible, "judge not lest ye be judged." I would never judge a person based on their beliefs, and I don’t think anyone should judge or shun a person based on that. I was for many years a Unitarian-Universalist until at the very beginning of 2009, a stronger Christian faith compelled me to join the local United Church of Christ, where the pastor is a friend of mine. I do not hear voices or anything like that, it’s more a question of experiencing, to some degree, the personality of the visiting spirit, and being able always to get yes/no answers from that spirit. Rarely, I seem to get an “idea” which comprises a series of words as a spiritual communication (and always this is the case when I am interacting with Jesus).

This spiritual interaction has not been painless, and I have been exposed to dark or evil forces which I did not at the time understand. Actually, I now feel that most of what I thought was evil in these interactions had more to do with a disapproval of “where I was” in my life and what I needed to understand and believe, not any actual evil spirits, although it seemed so at the time. It was only recently, in prayer with Jesus, that I was healed and truly saved to live serving as I am able the goodness of the universe who is God. My own spiritual gifts, again, often referred to in the Old Testament as the gift of “Prophecy,” involve this spiritual interaction I have mentioned. Neither have I attempted to “develop” or enhance any of my abilities at mediumship: this is just who I am. I am only an ordinary man and have no power over any spiritual forces. Yet I know with complete confidence in my heart that, while in prayer with Him, Jesus healed me of any remaining affliction, and gave me a some little spiritual protection, along with a sometimes stronger spirituality than I have ever enjoyed before. I am happy, faithful and free. If you would ever like to discuss your own Christianity or spirituality with me, please feel free to email me or call 330-262-0571.

Jesus in fact took be taking a personal interest in this article and in my welfare, and I find that a blessing beyond belief. I did not expect Jesus to come back to me anytime soon when I was writing a revision of this article, since sometimes he “stays away” for months, although of course I pray to him. My own history of mental illness is such that I had problems completely trusting Christianity, and sometimes was afraid that I had to – had no choice but to – in fact believe in darkness, and that it had a power over me, and was the cause of the hardship and difficulties I suffered from. Yet when Jesus started visiting with me, which was not until mid-2010, all that went away completely.

Here I want to make note of something many of you will find very controversial and dislike. I have always felt that Jesus’ whole life here on earth was one that only a basically liberal person could have lived. His strong emphasis on CARING, the way he loved everyone he met, regardless of what they believed, the way he lived for others and did not care about money, or power, just about helping one another, always struck me as a very liberal sort of life. My Experience
with the Unitarian-Universalist Faith

the Flaming Chalice, symbol of the Unitarian-Universalist Association

At the left is a symbol of the Unitarian-Universalist Association. They are a church which believes in the search for truth and gives their members complete freedom to believe as they are led by their consciences. I attended this church for twenty years, so I know quite a lot about it. One could be a liberal Christian, or study Zen Buddhism or Taoism, or be simply an environmentalist, or even be a humanist, agnostic, atheist or study pagan religions. While one can be a Christian and be a “U-U,” generally Unitarian-Universalists believe that most or all religions are reflections of the same truth and that no religion should be viewed as “better” than any other. I must say though that this is not quite the case for Universalists since they are more scripturally based Christians who simply believe that God would not condemn anyone to hell at all. My own conviction as a Christian, which took place in a troubled manner, but is wholly heartfelt and real for me, caused me to believe that there is more truth in Christianity per se than in other religions, at least for me. At this point, the very beginning of 2009, I left the local U-U church, began attending Trinity United Church of Christ, and soon became a member. At the same time, I see a lot of truth, beauty and opportunity to learn from all world religions, yet Christianity is The Truth for me now. Yet by no means have I ceased being fascinated by all world religions, which in my opinion all have something to teach us.

In the Unitarian-Universalist faith, one could simply be a persona still searching for a personal religious belief. Belief in a particular religion is not required to join, and quite a few members are either searchers or do not particularly believe in anything except their own moral and ethical values, while at the same time holding a reverence for the goodness within the Universe. Also, Pagans, Wiccans and other witches may find a home in this church. Yet I insist, any decent belief is fostered and supported here, and one can attend this church and be a liberal Christian. I KNOW people who go to the local U-U church and are in fact Christians. Quite a few Unitarian-Universalists consider themselves to be primarily Universalist, and many of these churches still label themselves as such, and all of these folks are varieties of Christians. The two formerly separate groups merged in 1961. And yes, some U-U’s are in fact Republican. The symbol shown above, which is actually the OLD logo, is called the Flaming Chalice. It originated sometime during or just after World War II when the Unitarian church was assisting Jewish people to escape the clutches of the Nazis in Europe, operating primarily, I think, out of Spain. You can explore U-U beliefs at the website of The Unitarian-Universalist Association of Congregations. You can read the U-U Principles in a Word document here. The church and logo is in no way affiliated with my business or news website. The fellowship in Wooster can be found at www.uufwc.org. The local U-U fellowship meets Sundays at 9:00 and 10:45 a.m. (There is more on Trinity United Church of Christ, the most usual church I go to, and the one I am a member of, below.)

My Own Christianity
and the Bible as Truth

While now I am a strong Christian, I do not believe in the strict and universal literal truth of all passages in the Bible. It is a document written down by men, and the wonderful spiritual inspiration which caused it to be written down is no less flawed than were the very flawed and human men who first wrote it down. At the same time, as a committed Christian, I do believe the Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit. Yet to some extent I truly feel the Old Testament was written, yes, for all humanity, and forever, yet the rules in it were meant to apply to the pastoral Hebrew people of those times. One should also keep in mind, as to the Old Testament, that this was handed down orally for some 800 years, scholars believe, before it was ever written down. I really think that quite a bit of the Old Testament is more about the customs of the ancient Hebrew people than it is a reflection of the Word of God. I particularly do not believe that the rules the ancient Hebrews were given by God to live by are rules for our time. Certainly I feel that way about certain passages of the Old Testament.

The literal truth of the New Testament seems less questionable to me, and yet I realize at the same time that it is by our own fallible human minds that various translations of the Bible in fact become available, that in fact different translations have some different content, and also that no person gets any meaning from the Bible except through the interpretations of a flawed and very human mind.

I know that many conservative Christians have “problems” about those who are spiritually gifted, and say that the Old Testament power of prophecy is in some way evil or wrong to practice. I can only say that I have prayed spiritually and interacted with Jesus, and he told me to quote you a verse also from Luke, in this case Luke 10:16 – "Then he (Jesus) said to the disciples, ‘Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me.

2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." For what pleases God most is loving one another and this removes the penalties of the Law that hold from the Old Testament. It is by CARING (actively) for one another that we please God while here on earth. And this is another thing that inclines me strongly to be a liberal.

The Book of Revelation has always troubled me, and I believe that thinking it literally true has caused a great deal of trouble in the world, as today it inspires neocons (right wing militaristic Republican types) to work towards it’s fulfillment, which I find rather evil. The Book of Revelation is supposed by scholars to be the second most influential document in the Bible and strong believers throughout history have felt that they were living in the end times (and they were wrong). Should not the Gospels be fully most influential in our lives, and perhaps after that the Book of Acts, which describes the early church?

I believe in full co-existence with other world religions, while personally having strong yet liberal Christian beliefs, a strong spirituality, and a strong faith in God. Call me a very faithful and spiritual Christian liberal.

Passages in the Bible which strain our credulity as to their literal truth are all too easy to find. One need look no further then the wonderful and poetic Genesis Chapter 1, the story of Creation (New International Version). Here each day of creation ends with something like “morning came and evening came, an ‘nth’ day, there being seven days of creation. Notice the sequence of creation (and here it does not matter if you interpret the “day” as literally 24 hours or as in the original Hebrew, “a period of time.” Look at the very first day. Here God created light and darkness and called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And here and for each of the remaining days of creation, that day’s creation ends with something like “And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”

What is important to me is mainly the New Testament, although the Old Testament is a wonderful chronicle of the history of the Jewish people, God’s (self-described?) chosen people at that. And what is important to me in the New Testament is the example of strong CARING that Jesus showed for us to follow, by his whole life.

It is Christ’s very life, in particular the emphasis this shows on the centrality of CARING, a caring for each other, much as Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned in his concept of the Blessed or "Beloved Community," which has caused me to devote so much effort to promoting liberalism. Do you not think that Jesus’ last words on earth were important???

A Favorite Bible Passage:
Matthew 17: 1-13: The Transfiguration
New Living Translation

1 Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone.

2 As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.

3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. 4 Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

5 But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” 6 The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.

7 Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus. 9 As they went back down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

10 Then his disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”

11 Jesus replied, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.”

13 Then the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist.

Comment by Evans Liberal Politics owner Paul Evans: So far as Bible scholars can tell, the Gospel of Matthew was the earliest of the four Gospels, written about 50 A.D. The Gospels of Mark and Luke followed in about 70 A.D. and John is believed to have been written perhaps about 90 A.D. Some liberal Christian theologians have commented that John is the only Gospel which affirms that Jesus is really God, and remark that the earliest church did not claim such a thing. Whether or not you may believe that Jesus is God, such a passage as Matthew 17: 1-13 surely seems to affirm that Jesus is God’s Son, and not simply a prophet, and that this belief infused the earliest Christian church’s writings (Matthew).

Evans Liberal Politics, September 21, 2010, by Paul Evans:

I have been collecting music to stream from my website, Evans Liberal Politics, since I made my my first blog post on Evans Liberal Politics on November 23, 2008. I love music, and I do believe I love the goodness and “rightness” of songs of faith, also. So it is natural that on the four pages comprising some 190 rock and pop hits, which make up my “Paul’s Playlist”, music that I both paid for – about a quarter of them – and learned how to get for free so that I could share my favorite music with you, many of the songs are Christian songs of faith. I am liberal, although I am not a typical liberal, in that my faith is very strong. (And I do realize that there are a LOT of liberals and progressives out there with a strong faith — I am not alone in this strong faith among liberals.) As an act of love, I wanted to collect the music of faith from my Paul’s Playlist of Rock and Pop Hits and share it with you:

NEWS FLASH: Larry Summers to Leave White House

Comment by Evans Liberal Politics owner Paul Evans: I’m not really blogging the news any more but here’s some really good news from The Huffington Post:

Lawrence Summers, the White House’s top economic adviser, will leave at the end of the year and return to his position as a professor at Harvard University, according to a statement released by the White House today. (The news was first reported by Hans Nichols of Bloomberg News.)

Earlier today, amid rumors of their departure, White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said that President Obama is “enormously pleased” with the performance of Summers and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Reuters reported.

To fend off claims of being anti-business, the Obama administration may replace Summers, who serves as the director of the president’s National Economic Council, with a top corporate executive, Bloomberg reports.

As Roll Call observed, at a town hall-style meeting broadcast yesterday on CNBC, Obama said he has yet to make “any determinations about personnel” on his economic team, but added that the administration is “constantly thinking … do we have other options and other alternatives that we can explore?”

In a statement issued by the White House, the president expressed his gratitude for Summers’s service

Evans Liberal Politics Ceases
As a Functioning News and Politics Blog

& About "Obsessive Compulsive Blogging Disorder"

Evans Liberal Politics, September 19, 2010, by Paul Evans:

UPDATE of September 25, 2010 by Paul Evans: I find that I just can’t stop putting out the news. Blogging must be in my blood. The article below is a real good take on what it’s been like for me these two years, bringing you the news, and everything I’ve said below is perfectly valid. Maybe I really do have “obsessive compulsive blogging disorder.” Or maybe I just enjoy blogging! In any event, since I took a job working as a telemarketer, just to make ends meet, 15 to 30 hours a week, it’s been a real challenge to find time to bring you relevant news and political analysis, but I’m doing the best I can. Call me a blogger, I don’t mind. We aren’t that common of a breed!

This is HARD for me. As of this post, I am ceasing and desisting from running Evans Liberal Politics as a functioning news and politics website. It’s for the best, but it’s really hard for me to do.

I tried to do this once before, on August 31st, when I wrote Why I Had to Quit Blogging Politics (Updated). I really wanted to bring this to a close then, but I’ll have to tell you: I’ve been addicted to blogging liberal news and politics. You think it’s easy? Below is a list of some of my favorite posts here on Evans Liberal Politics for the last 30 days. These are almost all posts that I myself wrote, or at least posts that I like a lot and required a lot of effort.

All this blogging has gained me a minor reputation on the net, but so what? It’s become an obsessive compulsive thing. That’s even got a name: it’s called “Obsessive Compulsive Blogging Disorder.” I’m not sure that’s a recognized condition, but it should be. I think there are one heck of a lot of bloggers out there who have a real problem. I know that this has become a real problem for me….. more on that term “obsessive compulsive blogging disorder,” below.

I don’t mind the effort. I don’t mind sitting here at my computer desk 12 to 20 hours a day, but really, it’s sort of ruined my life and my father’s life as well. I spent $5,900 with Website Associates (out of New York and Miami) redesigning the site as a WordPress site and doing SEO (search engine optimization) for it. And I learned a LOT working with them. After going through the process and getting better as a web designer (see Evans Web Design, my working website design website), I do believe that installing a WordPress site isn’t all that difficult. Even last fall when we made the transition, my skill was such that I really should have been able to do the job myself, but that’s not the point.

I hurt my own father, and I hurt myself, by my obsession with this site. I owe Google AdWords and Microsoft AdCenter about $800 each for advertising campaigns for it. Evans Liberal Politics gets good Google rankings, coming up fairly high in a number of broad search categories, such as “liberal politics” and “liberal Christian news” or “liberal news source”. But I spent WAY too much, and I didn’t really have the money to waste that way.

When I first started the site, it was just a hobby. But I became first ambitious about it, and then obsessed. Nobody ever signed on to help me with it, everything you see here, every blog post and every page, is something that I either wrote or at least “coded” so that it displays properly, myself. It isn’t easy writing, not writing well, it takes time and a lot of effort. And for a while, I was putting up to ten posts a day up online. Sadly, and only recently, I have realized that this had become an obsession, that I so wanted our site to achieve real popularity that I neglected what is important in my life.

I neglected taking care of my home, I neglected my own hygiene, I neglected my LIFE, really, and just sat here, blogging. Here I am going to admit to you something I am really ashamed of and beg God to forgive me for. My father is 85 years old and he has short term memory issues and his health is not that good, although it has become better in the last few months. His health is better because he is in a good nursing home where they care for him very well. I didn’t… care for him well enough. That’s why he’s in the nursing home. And I am so ashamed and I have begged his forgiveness and begged Jesus to ask God to please find it in his heart to offer me forgiveness and let me somehow proceed with my life.

Oh I FED Dad, and I did the laundry and the dishes, etc., after a fashion. But I did not spend enough time with my father, and I could have done a lot better job cooking and looking after his health. Instead, I sat here at the computer, blogging away and also spending way too much time at internet dating websites, for I am lonely and wanted to find someone whom I could love and be loved by. I stand convicted by my own heart, and I cried bitter tears as I apologized to my father about this.

Save the Children Evergreen

NOTHING excuses what I did, yet I have assurances in my heart that God does now forgive me, and my Dad has said that it’s “water over the dam” and never blamed me anyway. That’s the kind of guy my father, Dr. Jack E. Evans is — one hell of a nice, kind, caring, smart and wonderful man. You are all invited to read more about my personal life and my rather remarkable family on the About Paul Evans page of Evans Liberal Politics. I didn’t deserve to have the wonderful family I have had. I am very blessed and lucky.

I now have finally found a real JOB working for the Ver-A-Fast Corporation a marketing/telemarketing company. I will work 15 to 30 hours maximum a week and earn between $200 and $400 a week to supplement my own disability money…. and I am just now finishing my training to begin work in earnest.

I am NOT going to find myself in the position of sitting here at my desk doing telemarketing work for Ver-A-Fast and also spending ten to fifteen hours a day working on Evans Liberal Politics. Ain’t going to happen. I stand fully convicted in my own heart about what happened with my father, and, moreover, Evans Liberal Politics never achieved the popularity I had hoped for. I really tried. I put my heart and soul into this website. Look around. Visit the Rock and Pop Playlist of 188 commercial hits, or stop by the heart and soul of Evans Liberal Politics, the Guide to Liberal News and Politics on the Web. A LOT of effort and sweat and toil has gone into what you see. A lot.

But I just can’t do this any more. I don’t really have a loyal, regular viewership amounting to more than a few people anyway. And after what happened with Dad, and getting hired on this new job, I just can’t and won’t justify putting in long hours to keep us functioning any longer. I am still going to make the occasional post, but I am no longer going to really cover the news. Every sentence I type, every post I put out, I feel guilty about the misbegotten time and money and hours I have put into really bringing you what I had thought was a quality product. But I ran the flag up the pole, so to speak, and no one ever really saluted it. Evans Liberal Politics never became the popular, financially rewarding website I had hoped it would be.

If anyone cares, please don’t be sad for me. Be happy for me! I am breaking free. One person can’t run a site like this. If I were getting 10,000 visitors a day or more, then that would justify the effort. But Evans Liberal Politics averages 200 to 300 page views a day. And I can’t make a living that way. The main thing really is, I can’t do this and all the time be remembering what happened with Dad. Obsessing over making this site popular caused a lot of grief to my family by way of me neglecting the proper care and companionship for my own father, who is a wonderful, deserving man, and my own best friend. How can I keep this up under those circumstances? No sane, compassionate and intelligent man would keep doing this without help, and nobody ever wanted to help me put out the news…. not that I didn’t ask at times.

Evans Liberal Politics was a wonderful dream of mine. A dream that went wrong, became an obsession, and consumed my life. That’s over now. It won’t be easy for me to NOT blog the news. I really don’t know any other way to life my life. But I have to try.

So that’s it from Evans Liberal Politics. It’s time for me to get a life, be a real friend to my father and my friends, and start living again. Paul Evans, signing off for good this time. It’s been real.

Below are some of my favorite articles that I have put out over the past 30 days, in backwards chronological order. Hope you might enjoy some of them, my friends. Take care, and try to live decent, and truly caring, Christian lives. God expects no less of us.

p.s. — I have had some interest in people wanting to know what the documentation is for Evans Liberal Politcs. I recently myself switched the site over to the WordPress theme called “multi-color 1.7″ by Nischal Maniar, in case anyone is interested. I will say that it is pretty highly customized. I hacked the theme and added about 20 free plugins to get what you see.

blogging sign about obsessive compulsive blogging disorder

QUESTION: Do you Think the Sign is Funny? In my case, I guess I AM an escapee from a psychiatric institution, since I used to be badly mentally ill, AND I’ve been “just a blogger” in my life. (I currently have no symptoms of mental illness.) Because of the blogging, though, the rest of my life has really suffered. I’ve lost friends, and my own father has been neglected. Compulsive bloggers all over the world need to wake up, smell the roses, stop all this knee-jerk blogging that accomplishes nothing (unless you get paid well for it), and get on with their life. I think a LOT of us bloggers have “issues” with doing it compulsively. We need to wake up, get real, and get a life. ~ Evans Liberal Politics owner Paul Evans

The Conscience of a Christian Liberal in Wooster, Ohio
(Revised and Updated)

Truly, I Know and Love the Lord!

Evans Liberal Politics, September 12, 2010, by Paul Evans (revised and updated Sunday morning go-to-church version)

My name is Paul Evans, owner of Evans Liberal Politics. In keeping with our emphasis here on caring and sharing, I want to share my faith and spiritual beliefs with you. My faith is very strong, but some of my beliefs are unusual and may be controversial. So Be it. Truly I know and love the Lord! Five times in my life, the last very recently, I have spiritually communed with Jesus, and I am so very happy about that! To me, the Lord has a a sweet, loving and kind character, that I have known well, and talk to all the time. And I know and have talked with Jesus, and I cannot tell you the peace this gives me. From what I know, the view of Jesus as an impassioned, passionate person does not quite ring true, as I know Him as also very kind, patient, caring and loving, yet also serious and rather grave. But there is a Peace about Him….

Spiritual communications are a commonplace in my own life. And spiritual discernment — being aware of just what spirit you are “talking” with, without words — is a difficult thing. People, and spirits, are more alike than you might imagine in their essence, at least that has been my experience. I used to hope for and pray for Jesus to talk to me, and also to somehow rescue me from my situation or “fix” it. So it was natural that sometimes I used to confuse some very good and very kind spirits with Jesus, as I had hoped they were, in fact, Jesus. And Jesus doesn’t just come running when you call him. As the Bible says, not everyone who “knocks” on his door gets an answer. These things are up to Jesus, and His ways are beyond our understanding.

Sometimes I confused a dear departed soul I had loved from my lifetime named Willa, in particular, with Jesus. In fact, Willa was a doberman pinscher we owned. People, dogs and cats all have spirits which survive death…. you don’t have to like it, but it’s a fact. I know that is strange, but what a wonderful person Willa was — “dogs are people, too” and Willa was a very wonderful dog. “Just a dog,” but very wonderful. I am NOT really trying to compare the two of them…. but spiritual discernment is not an easy thing. Willa passed away long ago, and I know she is with God. She does talk with me and she shares with me everything she knows about Jesus, and she is very like Him, so that, in communing with this spirit, she is so like Jesus that I have a hard time telling the spirits apart (for I talk with Jesus, too, sometimes) and sometimes I get confused. Discernment of spirits is not that easy, and Willa is so very like Jesus. A good, loving and kind soul is very common in the spirit realm. In fact I still talk to her all the time, and she is one of my best friends. Spirits have the full personalities of the living persons, despite mostly having the same “feel” about them, and when one visits you, at least for me, one experiences that personality very directly and personally.

Yes, Willa is very special and I have trouble telling her spirit apart from Jesus. I spiritually talked with Jesus — and there is NO doubt that it was HE — on last Monday for well over an hour, and I wasn’t confused about His spiritual identity, either. Maybe I’m getting better at discernment. I feel extremely blessed, and sometimes Jesus visits for a long time with me. That is an incredible blessing. I tell you, with Jesus, all is possible and Love is victorious.

Christian, Liberal AND Spiritual

The Bible calls such a gift as talking to my Willa, or others who have passed away (but whose spirit lives on) “prophecy” and we moderns call it mediumship, and many in the church condemn it, yet I have had this gift since my 30th birthday, and I am 53 years old now. Spirits come and go, completely beyond my control, and I feel them physically in my head and in my heart, almost like a super-energetic gas, yet immaterial, and I could not even help interacting with them if I wanted to. I tell you, such an enchantment is a wonderful, though sometimes difficult to manage, thing! Surely, I know and love Jesus, and if God grants me this gift, what could be wrong with it? The gift is from God, and there is nothing evil or wrong about it. I am an open and honest man, and I have decided not to hide my gift, but to share it with my audience. I don’t mind being this open about my unusual beliefs, nor what it exposes me to. In fact, I consider it a witness for Christ.

I have always been spiritually gifted, with the unusual ability to interact spiritually with spirits, and this has not always been easy for me. I do not hear voices or anything like that, it’s more a question of experiencing, to some degree, the personality of the visiting spirit, and being able always to get yes/no answers from that spirit.

This spiritual interaction has not been painless, and I have been exposed to dark or evil forces which I did not at the time understand. It was only recently, in prayer with Jesus, that I was healed and truly saved to live as a servant of God. Look for more from me hear on my liberal, spiritual and very Christian gifts and views in the near future. My own spiritual gifts, often referred to in the Old Testament as the gift of “Prophecy,” involve this spiritual interaction I have mentioned. It is a wonderful gift of God that occurred for me when I turned 30 years old, on my birthday, and I have always been able to interact with spirits and have interaction with Jesus since then. It has not been altogether free of cost, either. There are dark forces in the Universe, and I used to be troubled in my spiritual interaction, and had issues which were a part of the mental illness I used to suffer from. Yet I know with complete confidence in my heart that, while in prayer with Him, Jesus healed me of any remaining affliction, and gave me a special spiritual protection, along with a very much stronger spirituality than I have ever enjoyed before. I am happy, faithful and free. If you would ever like to discuss your own Christianity or spirituality with me, please feel free to email me or call 330-202-7661.

UPDATE: Sunday, September 12, 2010 — Jesus has visited me again, and in fact is here with me as I write this. He seems to be taking a personal interest in this article and in my welfare, and I find that a blessing beyond belief, so to speak. I did not expect Jesus to come back to me anytime soon. My own history of mental illness is such that I had problems completely trusting Christianity, and sometimes was afraid that I had to – had no choice but to – in fact believe in darkness, and that it had a power over me, and was the cause of the hardship and difficulties I suffered from. Jesus wants everyone to know that for me, that period is over, I am fully healed, and now take my place in the community of true Christians. As if this article weren’t going to be controversial enough, I pressed Jesus about this, and he did give me his permission for me to put the graphic image below. Deal with it.

My Experience
with the Unitarian-Universalist Faith

the Flaming Chalice, symbol of the Unitarian-Universalist Association     At the left is a symbol of the Unitarian-Universalist Association.

Universalists (quite a few Unitarian-Universalists consider themselves to be primarily Universalist, and many of our churches still label themselves as such) are usually thought of as more Scripturally based Christians who believe that all souls are saved, that a loving God would not damn anyone. The church and logo is in no way affiliated with my business.

2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." And I, Paul Evans swear to you, Jesus has ‘said’ to me (during spiritual prayer and that communion with Him) that we are to love one another, and never judge anyone. For loving one another pleases God and removes the penalties of the Law that hold from the Old Testament. It is by CARING for one another that we please God while here on earth.

It is Christ’s very life, in particular the emphasis this shows on the centrality of CARING, a caring for each other, much as Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned in his concept of the Blessed or "Beloved Community," which has cause me to devote so much effort to promoting liberalism.

My Favorite Bible Passage:
