Easter Greetiings
From Evans Liberal Politics

He Is Risen!

Happy Easter to everybody! As a Christian Liberal Politics blog, embedded in a larger website, we want to extend our warmest greetings and hope everyone is having a blessed, special and sacred Easter day. Let me just say that, as someone who has spent almost his entire life as an agnostic person, I believe very strongly that nobody should be excluded, much less shunned, or treated in any way unequally, because of their beliefs. Like the Unitarian Universalists, as a liberal and rational man, my first principle for many years has been the “inherent worth and dignity” of every person, regardless of their beliefs.

As a dedicated liberal, I have something I need to get off of my chest. I have a lot of friends and neighbors who are against the health insurance reform bill. Let me just say that, after examining all the evidence, I truly feel that, despite having been somewhat ruined by lobbyists, the bill is a good thing for America. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t going to be painful, at least until the subsidies kick in after three years. There are some people who are just barely getting by and simply don’t have $50 a month for the most basic, actually pretty cruddy health insurance, and I feel really bad for them. I do think the bill is necessary — absolutely necessary and helpful for America — and that it does good things which I have gone to great lengths to explain over the last several months. But for a lot of people, being FORCED to buy health insurance goes strongly against the grain. I really am pretty darned sure that ultimately, if you are low income, the government is basically going to pick up the tab, and, you realize, Medicaid will be greatly expanded. But my sympathies are with the little people who may in fact be somewhat hurt or inconvenienced by health care reform. I’m sure in my own mind, it’s still a good thing for America. Objectively, I’m pretty darned certain of that.

But I’m truly sorry about the divide this bill has caused in America, the antagonism and bad blood between the two parties, pitting neighbor against neighbor and even dividing families. We need to love and care for each other, even while we disagree about important political matters. I’m sure that’s what Jesus would want. Don’t you think so?

Most particularly today, Evans Liberal Politics wants to extend our sincere wishes to fellow Christians for a blessed, sacred and very special Easter day. Pray with me, if you will, this little Easter prayer: “I am forgiven. Know that, everywhere, in every faith, God is God. I am forgiven, and God is God”.

If you’d like, you are invited to watch “Where You Are”, a special Christian YouTube rock music video from the Wooster Church of the Nazarene.

Below are some songs from our #1 rated (Google) Electronic Rock Playlist, which we hope you will enjoy this Easter day. We feel that even those who find themselves outside of the Christian communion might really enjoy these songs, and we hope you give them a listen!

Ohio’s Own Sherrod Brown
on Healthcare Reform

Ohio’s Own Sherrod Brown on Healthcare Reform, Evans Politics from U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, March 3, 2010, by Sherrod Brown, quoted verbatim.

When it comes to health care, the cost of inaction is simply too high. More than 390 Ohioans lose their health insurance every day. Small businesses and the self-employed often pay double or triple what large businesses pay for coverage. By 2007, 62 percent of bankruptcies were due to medical costs. And forty-five thousand Americans die each year because they are uninsured and can’t get the care they need. American families and businesses deserve better.

On November 7, 2009, the House of Representatives passed legislation, the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962), by a vote of 220 to 215. A consolidated Senate health reform bill, the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (H.R. 3590) was passed on December 24, 2009, by a vote of 60 to 39. Though similar in many respects, these bills are not identical. Congress is currently working to produce a final piece of legislation.

The bill passed by the Senate late last year, with my support, would lower costs for middle class families with insurance, while providing help to 31 million Americans who lack it. This legislation would also invest in small businesses by providing an immediate tax credit to help employers afford health benefits for their workers, and would place an immediate ban on pre-existing condition exclusions for children. Despite the great deal of misinformation circulating about health reform, seniors on Medicare would see their prescription drug costs cut in half, not increased, and for the first time, would have access to free annual check-ups and preventive screenings. The bill, which has been endorsed by AARP, would also extend Medicare’s solvency by nearly a decade.

Overall, passage of both the House and Senate legislation means that Americans are one step closer to having affordable insurance options if they change or lose their jobs. It means we are one step closer to ending insurance industry practices that cut off access to medically-necessary care or discriminate against women or individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. And it means we are one step closer to ensuring that insurance companies will have to spend premium dollars on medical care – rather than on lavish sales trips and exorbitant CEO salaries – or else give rebates to consumers.

Your views on this and other aspects of health reform are welcomed, and I will keep them in mind as Congress moves forward.
